sounds like its a stock 500 with 2.0 roms, like burseg says. Anyhow there could be a couple of reasons why the trapdoor expansion may not be working, I'd say the main reason would be because someone tried out a 1mb chip hack that went wrong.

So I'd say you are going to have to open up your 500 and first identify what motherboard revision you got. If rev 5 read up the article below refer to section : "vii. 1Mb of Motherboard Memory on the Rev. 5"

If rev 6 then your jumpers[1] are out of wack cos someone tried a hardware hack that went wrong and forgot to put the jumpers back in the original position. To have an idea where they were read up:

this file has doco on howto have 1mb chip on rev5 and rev6, but also shows a diagram of the original position the jumpers are in.
