Another option could be to use a boot floppy which mounts the hd via on disk mountlist and scsi.device and transfers control to the hd and boots from there saving precious memory used by softkicking. I had to use such a setup with my kick 37.299 A600 (as it had no inbuilt scsi.device).
The above is assuming wanting to use a real kickstart 1.3 or a hardware romswitcher should softkicking custom roms not doing what you want.
