Wayout was an early C64 game that really wowed me when I later discovered. At the time when most of the maze games only allowed 90 degree turns, Wayout incorporates a free to roam 3D maze not completely unlike Wolfenstein.
There's also some other nice technical things here in the gradient background, wind physics and particles (jump to 1:47)
