What version is your gvpscsi.device? You can find out by looking at what is printed on the sticker on top of the ROM or by typing in 'version gvpscsi.device' (without quotes).
Latest version is 4.15. I would guess that earlier versions would fail on drives that are even smaller than the OS 3.1 limit of 4GB.
