Although some basic support for hard files is possible with the original PIC micro controller and alternative firmware it's impractical with any larger volumes. Booting from a 2 GB hard file takes 4 seconds with an ARM controller and 155 seconds with the PIC. With the ARM you get over 1500 KB/s read speed while with the PIC only 100 KB/s.

The Minimig is not a simulation. It's a real hardware compatible with Amiga chipset. With the current firmware the slowdowns are practically non-existent.
