As you said - A500 will only use 5 planes/32 colours. You can think of this as 5 BITS of colour, or the decimal values 0-31.

You can use a standard byte chunky screen on A500 with no probs - but only plot pixels using values 0-31 instead of 0-255. Then when doing C2P you don't need to bother with data for planes 6,7,8.

But this is going to be very slow indeed unless you have an accelerated A500...
