What you really want do experiment with is the Prometheus-Board with the Firestorm firmware by Michael Boehmer. If you ask him kindly, he'll upgrade the board.
The Prometheus does support alternative busmasters and MastaTabs (from a1k) got the Sonnet 7200 working with a little output on the serial interface.
