It sounds to me like your old Simpsons game disk may have been afflicted with mould growth. This would have produced a squealing noise while the disk was spinning and contaminated the drive heads, and it is this which is now causing the same symptoms with all subsequent disks.

The floppy drive and disks may just need a good clean.
