recently upgraded exotica server to php 5.4 / mysql 5.5 - although im considering going back to mysql 5.1 as I have seen a noticable increase in IOWAIT from mysql 5.1

Also might look into possibly switching to MariaDB.

Just to share my thoughts -- mysql 5.5 could quite well be slower in some cases and faster than others, and some of the thread/cache settings are different by default too.
