Just "F12" alone on Macs by default does not actually trigger the F12, instead you get a special key press
.
- Fn + 12 will normally activate the F12 key.
- But F12 may be intercepted by the OS X desktop (at least in windowed mode).
- You can add another key to the combo, such as Cmd, so the desktop shortcut won't activate
That gives you
Fn+Cmd+F12 (which is really just Cmd+F12).
(In fullscreen, you can probably drop Cmd).

What I've done on the Macbook to avoid this is to:
- Use a system setting to invert the F-keys / special keys, so you'll get an F12 key press when you press... F12
- Disable the F12 shortcut to open the Dashboard in preferences.
