It made tremendous success in that decade, albeit I never played it and was released for many platforms like Apple II, MSX, ZX Spectrum, CP/M, etc. Maybe that is the game you are looking for.
That's some nice deduction Leandro but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the game I'm looking for, also I can't find the BBC Micro version of that game...I did find a Video of Amazonia on youtube but it doesn't show a map screen, only text. The link you made with Brazil might prove helpful...the search continues..
