Reducing the sound buffer too much on a P400 machine might actually cause the sound to get really choppy, so be careful with this tip!
I know what I'm talking about (P133 -> K6-266 -> K6-III-450 -> Athlon TB).

People who would LAUGH about other people's low-performance PCs are, to my opinion, wretched assholes and might as well jump in a lake. So don't rack your brains too much about your machine.
