I was always led to believe that using cotton buds to clean drive heads was dangerous as they can leave fibres in the heads therefore irrevocably damaging them. The correct tool for the job is a chamois cleaning pad.

Here's a link to a farnell supplied tool which is sadly no longer manufactured but you get the idea.
