Dan, I was thinking in using DirWork 2.1 with a Dopus 4.x like config. DirWork is highly configurable and flexible, it requires even less resources than DM2, and can be set to look like any filemanager, or even like a dockbar
I will contact the author to get his permission for distribution (I already know him, and he has been a generous guy in the past).
