Some really good points raised there...
I loved Frontier, I really had to use my imagination (reading the story book helped) to fill in the gaps as it does turn into a point and click game with no real plot and a lack of clear rewarding goals...

However played in the right way, which requires a massive amount of self control (which games should really do for you). For example, only saving on landing (many a time did a manual landing on a dead world). You can get a lot of freedom and open ended gameplay, which I haven't really experienced on any format since
