It was the worst thing that could happen!
I know it even in some detail:
Normally, they used HEAVY1 algorithm, also because some demos broke if you packed them with HEAVY2. BUT
: some BBSes used auto-recompressing techniques which turned HEAVY1 into HEAVY2, breaking the images in the process!!
That's just why zeg and others have to dig into their private archives to find 100% working copies, because the BBS-drawn ones often turn out to be knackered.
Oh yes, DMS has really wreaked lots of havoc.
