I think shoot-em-ups are a form of secret government training for the masses to prepare us for the impending interplanetary war...
...that way we're ready to kick some alien but without the mass-panic that would ensue if 'they' came clean.
That's why they look similar:
Crop circles ARE to do with alien visitations
Games designed to train us modelled on 'ET' WILL have close resemblances.
