Any PlayStation disc, even for PSOne, is impossible to copy without certain knowledge, closely-guarded by Sony Corporation, of the disc layout. The boot sector is the key to the whole mystery. Some say it contains an encoded PlayStation logo, but who knows for sure?
Rest assured that you would not have been able to generate a faithful copy of the original CD whatever the status of the .sub file.
This is why disc-swapping tricks have been developed to allow copy CDs to run. A boot sector is read from a genuine disc, which can then be substituted for a copy disc without the console knowing that this has been done. All one requires is a single genuine PlayStation CD game, and with it any number of other titles can be made to run from copy discs provided the console is suitably modified.
