It needs a big company to step in and create a new FPGA base platform for all the forth coming FPGA cores. Spend a little money porting the many cores out there to the platform. Amstrad, Spectrum, C64, Atari 800, Atari ST, Amiga all have FPGA cores which would be usable.
Mass production. Even with ACube doing a great job at reducing the costs, the profit margins are such that at £120 it just cannot compete with a £10 A600.
An A600 with a CF card to transfer games from the PC is just too easy to use and too cheap.

And to be fair, we're comparing a Minimig with an A600/500 with a scandoubler
