Applied quantum mechanics aside for a mo, I don't think the old boot screen is that bad, myself. I used to think it was pants, but then I went to art college and they taught me that any old wobbly crap is OK, as long as it is 'justified'. Modern art, baby!
The hand/disk image to me echoes the De Stijl movement, which advocated pure abstraction and simplicity. It may be a pastiche of Piet Mondrian's work, as it seems to be constructed with elements of the vocabulary of neoplasticism. The image contains both biomorphous and geometric shapes, and whilst the lines and colours are essentially displaced in the negative white background space, a sense of balance between the two is achieved courtesy of the weight of the black lines.
Either that, or an employee's kid drew it.
