You'll need the XDK to compile anything. 5933 was the last, but 5849 is the most popular.
Do you mean that the xbe files produced with OpenXDK can't be run on a hacked v1.6 console ? I assembled a xbe with some masm32 xbox distrib (i don't know yet if it works , tho)

There is a reasonable port of SDL if you prefer that over DirectX.
I assume SDL uses a frame buffer only to do software rendering so that's not really interesting.

There are no tech-docs about the hardware at the register level. You either use the pre-compiled libraries or.... you use the pre-compiled libraries.
I assume there shouldn't be much design difference from a geforce3 (maybe even xbox linux does have a hw driver for the card ?)
