My A500 with GVP HD8+4MB would halt when trying to load Flashback, I watched the freemem slowly deplete, and I experienced this with a few other large or many floppy games.
I thought the same as you regarding WHDLoad, then by removing the "Preload" option they all now load and run, it does load data from HD during the game now though.
