as for my opinion on the hardware matter... a VGA is a great piece of hardware and is/was capable of producing amazing gfx and was not limited to layers/sprites moving , like the amiga and console gfx chips of the time. It's chunky pixel-moving orientation was superior. the only problem is that programmers did not do their jobs correctly, because it was more difficult to program that to rely on custom chips... they could make easily an amiga game for example without worrying much about programming routines, where on the pc they should make routines for everything... it was only after 1993-94 that the PC gain ground and programmers started coding correctly...
