I think it's time to redress the balance slightly
Personally I'd go for Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 as great examples of how to do a 2D game in 3D. (Although I know not everyone will agree
)
Also, I really liked that Populous game on the PS1. And Micro Machines V3 was very cool.
