Unfortunately you are still going to need a driver for the joystick. all windows will see is a parallel port... nothing more... using non-pnp game controllers I seriously doubt will help.

by far the most effective method is to get a dsub E9 to USB, the controller chip sets its self up using pre-established Linux / MS Game controller in-built software.

IF the paralell dongle doesn`t blow the port (I would be cautious TBQH) you would still need to write a driver so you could use the joysticks on the parallel port.
