May not be a virus but bad utility (designed before harddrives were popular) that thought your hd was a floppy drive and for example tried to install new boot block to your hd and wiped the RDB..

Overwritten RDB also explains why partitions disappeared after reboot.

btw, most likely you would have been able to recover all files easily by restoring the RDB (there is utility somewhere that can find partitions automatically) but I guess it is too late now..
