Yeah if you never had any sort of contact with synthesis it will take you a bit ammount oftime with trial and error until you get it right.

Starting up with an already made instrument IS recommendable, after all, you are starting up.

There is no tutorial and I am not very didactic, but the most important thing you need to get going in AHX before pulling a sound is getting the ENVELOPE right.
This is the famous ADSR environment (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release).

Once you set those you should get sound. now play with the otehr parameters until it sounds like yo uwant it. If you can't be arsed to read on synthesis best thing you can do is experiment.

My recommendaton is that you open an already made instrument and listen teh differences when you tweak teh different parameters. Most didactic way there is.
