Backing up an Amiga HD

Some of my Amiga HDs are getting close to 10 years old, so disk failure is at the back of my mind.

What are some good methods/programs for backing up Amiga HDs?

I would like to back my HD up to a zip drive. In the past I have just copied the contents of the HD onto zip disk, but there are probably better solutions. It would also be nice to compress the data transparently.

[Historical note: Once upon a time I backed up my A600 to video tape using VBS - this is NOT a good option (far too slow and unreliable - and the only time I ever needed to restore something, the tape ended up being corrupt.)]
