Thank you for your replies. I guess I've been unlucky and got a bad 710N with 740N innards.
I guess my options are the BenQ which is easier to get hold of here or wait for a Indivision ECS to appear. I'm leaning more to BenQ as I can use it for other systems.
PS. Took addapter apart and there is an IC so can confirm that RetroFun adapter is buffered if anyone in future is questioning this.
