MUI is a graphical user interface only used by software developed with MUI in mind. Customising MUI will customise those applications, but not the rest of your system.

I go to settings in MUI and it shows a couple of alternate setups that look nice but only for registered users I suppose.
You can change all settings in an unregistered copy of MUI, you just can't save them - so they'll be lost when you reboot or turn the machine off. This can be circumvented with a simple trick: just copy the MUI settings from ENV: to ENVARC: once you have everything configured to your liking.
