uae4arm and iPega 9023 key mapping

Hi all.

So I have one of these controllers -

and the current version of uae4arm running on my 2013 Nexus 7.

While I know the controller's working great with native Android games I'm having lots of trouble remapping it to work with uae4arm. The controller itself has four connection modes and I'm fairly sure its keyboard mode is the one to use with uae4arm. In this mode so far as Android's concerned the controller's just like any other Bluetooth keyboard.

Each of the buttons on the controller are the following 'keyboard' keys in this mode:

D-PAD
Left = A
Right = D
Up = W
Down = S

LEFT THUMB STICK
Seems to function as cursor keys.

RIGHT THUMB STICK
Up = I
Down = K
Left = J
Right = L

BUTTON CLUSTER
X = 1
Y = 4
A = 2
B = 3

FRONT/SHOULDER BUTTONS
L =5
R = 6
L2 = 7
R2 = 8

And here's how I've tried to configure it in the emulator

Yet it doesn't have any effect whatsoever in any game.

I've tried everything I can think of including SDL remapping though I can't wrap my head around remapping in SDL and in the emulator itself so frankly I feel like I'm just toggling values rather than having any real idea what I'm doing. I've tried changing the emulator's Port0 and Port1 settings and toggling Custom Control and variations combinations thereof all out of frustration more than anything.

Now, what I'd really appreciate is some kind of Idiot's Guide to the basics because I am that idiot. Just enough to get me going on getting some of the controller's buttons working would do so that I can figure out the rest. I don't expect to be spoon-fed, just some help would be immensely appreciated.

And to the board regulars who may have encountered similar queries in the past - my apologies. I have searched the forum for solutions but if the answers are there, they're eluding me and I'd appreciate you pointing me in the direction of the existing posts. And then feel welcome to flame me to hell and back.

To everyone else - apologies that this is a long post but I felt it best to be as descriptive as possible.
