File types are defined in two ways:
1. The icon associated with the file: Program, Project, Drawer, or Disk. For Project (data) files, the default tool defines what program to load e.g. Multiview which uses datatypes to determine if its a text, picture, audio etc.
2. From OS 2 or later, you can now add def_icons (Default icons) loaded from ENV:Sys/ and will auto assign the correct icon and default program to use for lots of different file types. Check Aminet for them.
3 Programs on Amiga can run from Workbench (if an appropiate icon is assigned) or the Shell. most demos are designed to boot from disk and run from the startup sequence. So opening a shell and type and enter the filename is the way to go.
