Well done getting it working! I would suspect the original crashes might have something to do with a datatype using the FPU since these can be used for decoding the images. Datatypes are independent of the browser code, so even the 68000 version will use the 68030+FPU version of a datatype if that's what is installed, which will obviously crash.
