As stated before, when the games get to be too much crap people will start doing something different and the market will have problems like atari did in the 80's. While the market feeds off of lemmings, there is a limit to what is acceptable even for a lemming.
I would have thought that before the FPS boom, but there seems to be an endless appetite for game patches, sameness, keeping up with the Joneses, and submissive corporate dictatorialism. Never before in (gaming) history has mediocrity been such a manufactured effort. This lame trend has far outlasted music trends (except rap music, which it closely parallels anyhow).
This is what happens when the general public crashes our party. This and Windows. (sigh)
