Never really played the later ones, but to me Civ 2 was a massive improvement, including the user interface. Much slicker graphics, interesting new wonders, proper railroads, proper trade, reputation giving your strategies more long-term impact, and that's just off the top of my head. A shame it won't run on modern PCs - and a shame there wasn't a decent market for an Amiga version by 1996, 030 with 4Mb and HD might've been feasible, 040 and 8Mb easily. The AGA version of Civ 1 was quite nice, the Enemy Leader screens and that little water effect come to mind, but the main graphics weren't fully upgraded, alas.
