mdat is the song/pattern data and smpl are the used samples. You need both, but you 'start' the mdat file :)

Even if 'mod' is a rather vague file type...

Even if 'mod' is a rather vague file type description, I think storing both the pattern data and the samples in one file is a common thing among them. Oh and Dan mentioned a 'WinAmp/XMplay plugin' ;)
