256 Colours, Chunky Vs Planar, what was better?

I know the Amiga used Planar graphics, but for 256 colours, would chunky be the best format?

Planar, 40 bytes * 200 lines * 8 bitplanes = 64,000 bytes
Chunky, 1 bytes (from 00 - 256) * 320 pixels...

When I played the first one I thought it might be able to run on a standard A1200. It's just a static back drop and vectors on the top.

On one of the later fish disks there are IanUtils. And when run it adds Amiga key keyboard shortcuts to the menu. I don't know why they didn't think of that when they first released Workbench.
