Basically, if the game is complex enough, to deliver it's own save game routine, it's saver to use it, then save states. That's what I learned with Settlers, etc.

They are supposed to change autofire speed. Actually, I remember only one game, where this made a difference, as one speed setting kind of overfilled the buffer, and resulted in an irregular fire...
