This all seems to working pretty well, I can see games on my new monitor, and I can get a nice unflicking decent sized workbench screen, the only thing that's no good is IBrowse at a decent screen...

As long as I can get workbench in 800 by 600, (or preferably 1024×768) and my games on the same monitor I'll be happy.

When you say 'nothing' happens? What do you mean? Purple insert disk screen? Black screen? grey screen? If you reboot with the mouse buttons down what happens? Can you boot from a floppy?
