Are you loading a WHDLoad game? Save States don't work with WHDLoad games as they are actually Hard Drive images. Only ADF/IPF floppy images use this function.

I did not give up on this... I managed to get FS-UAE running in the end and finally able to confirm my USB controller (iBUFFALO Gamepad) working under Mac Silicon!

Are you using one of the Mayfash Arcade sticks? I have one myself and I know there is a button to toggle Analogue/D-Pad mode. Maybe this helps.
