The 1.3 rom they used in that video included scsi.device, so I guess you just need to use a rom without scsi.device and it won't boot the harddrive (or even know it's there).

But I think your motherboard probably have more problems than just that cap. Most likely there are some traces that have been broken from the battery leakage. I would check all the traces in that...

I'd love to see a standalone at that price! If the standalone will use the same FPGA, I don't see how it couldn't run on that board as well. But I'm silly like that, so I suppose it won't :)
