What are you talking about? The current version of MESS is available for Windows, Linux, various *BSD systems and MacOSX. Most of the developers are on non-Windows too.

I'm not sure what DirectX would have to do with it - surely WinUAE isn't using it to draw its tree controls. I'm using a self-compiled Wine 0.9.55 under Gentoo Linux by the way.
