Command & Conquer was still going strong in 2D all the way up to 1999.

Quake was the one that really put 2D gaming on ice for a while.

two player I really enjoyed it, but the single player campaign didn't really do it for me. You're just fighting beasts all the time after only a few matches.

The audio in the game is top notch....

Super Cars 2 would be another. It all started with a little demo on an Amiga Action coverdisk which allowed two player racing and had a jump in it that got the ball rolling. I really honed my skills...
