The graphics might very well be a problem if you want to make an acceptable version on A500 with the usual 512k/512k configuration, as (at least in my opinion) the thing that makes Metal Slug stand...

Remember that the Megadrive also has an SN76489 PSG, so that's 3 additional channels. Wouldn't be surprised if it's used for some of the sound effects.

He's specifically talking about the ST sound chip, which IS pretty much just a square wave generator. That there are other (more advanced) YM-chips available isn't relevant in this discussion.
