Ripping Advance Wars 2

Been thinking about porting Advance Wars 2 to Aga. So far I've got just about the whole sprite set:
Advance Wars 2 Port-advancewars_sprites_red.png Advance Wars 2 Port-advancewars2_2.png
The ones that are missing are the different human sprites for the other four teams.

Here are all of the background anims (hopefully).
Advance Wars 2 Port-advancewars_backframes.png Advance Wars 2 Port-advancewars2_1.png
All thats needed now are the rest of the background tiles (also for winter) and all the important tiles are ripped.

Please tell me if you are interested in this port. And I'm also thinking about other gba games. Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Finally done some more ripping.

Character graphics:
Advance Wars 2 Port-char-images.png

Unit graphics for stat window:
Advance Wars 2 Port-unit-images.png Advance Wars 2 Port-unit-images2x.png

Quite some work, and everything needs ordering (clearly), but it will get done.
Also, gba game graphics are often compressed (the gba's bios has a decompression routine), meaning you have to rip almost everything by hand...

Great work, it would be cool if you could port this game

A port would be awesome. It's one of the best turn-based strategy games in 2D.

Thanks everyone

From a technical viewpoint porting AW2 to aga is not a problem, the a1200 can handle it easily enough. Furthermore, I estimate that about a third to one half of all the needed graphics are there (a lot of the graphics can be re-colored using code).

I'll be doing some more ripping this weekend, so stay tuned.

It's probably a bit too soon, but Golden Sun is next on my extremely_cool_games_that_must_be_ported_to_Amiga list.

Good games these

AI is an important factor of course not to be messed up

Not to rain on on your parade but do you really need to devote all your efforts on this project - i can play AW for gba easily enough right now and i'm sure you could turn your hand at another Amiga project of your own.

Great if this is for one's own self satisfaction of course, it just seems like such a lot of time and sweat on something you don't have to do.

Good luck if you're really dedicated to this however as sometimes anouncements like this never happen.

Is this something that is tollerated by Nintendo?

It would be cool seeing AW running on Amiga though, if even just to laugh at how bizarre an achievement it all was.

Great!

Too bad I prefer Fire Emblem.

But every new Amiga game is a good Amiga game, right?!

Have done some ripping and ordering.

Here are the background tiles, and the background anims (ordered):
Advance Wars 2 Port-0001.png Advance Wars 2 Port-2x0001.png
The properties can be recolored (see palettes). Further more, for snow, they can be recolored as well!

These are all the property capturing gfx:
Advance Wars 2 Port-0002.png Advance Wars 2 Port-2x0002.png
All these can be recolored, too.

And these are the terrain description gfx:
Advance Wars 2 Port-0003.png Advance Wars 2 Port-2x0003.png

All the recoloring is going to be handled by software, so I'm not going to post all the re-colored gfx, as they really are all the same.

I've also ripped quite a few Black Hole buildings, but I still have to do some work on those. When done, I'll post them.

Turns out the unit status pictures are different for every team, just like the human sprites are different for every team. As this doesn't affect the game itself, I almost have enough graphics ripped to start programming. I will still rip these, and, will post them. Geuss not everything can be recolored

What I need the most right now are things like explosion anims.

I've also done work you cant really see: Save states for each level. Used cheats to rush through the game: Now I have access to the original campaign maps (not all of them, yet), including the ones with fog of war (fog off cheat shows all units). Pity theres no point in showing it here...

Yes, hope this is going well.

I do wonder about the leagality of it though - should you finish it and release it I suspect Nintendo might take a rather dim view of it.

Sofar I haven't done any work, because I've been busy and have recently been in the hospital for a few weeks (I've only been back home a couple of days) However, the project has only been on hold, and has not been canned in any way I still don't feel a hundred percent, but I'm going to continue all the Amiga things I was doing pretty soon, so stay tuned. And thanks for putting my little project in you blog (I just hope I won't disappoint you too much ).

Basically, I can start on programming the engine, which is the most important part. I have no idea how to do the a.i., since I still have to figure out how the original a.i. behaves. That is the only real problem, though, so it should be fine...

Oh I'm healthy enough It's that I've been in an accident and I've broken both my legs and five ribs Quite painfull, but everything is going to be just fine, as there were no complicated fractures, nor were there any peices of rib poking in the wrong places inside (thank goodness). I'm just going to take it easy for a while, but probably not too long, as I'm itching to do some work on those projects again
