Galactica - strategic turn-based game to play on the WB

Galactica is an Amiga version of the strategical Linux game Konquest. The goal is to dominate every single planet in the galaxy, defeating your opponent. The game runs on the Workbench screen.

I made this game for myself a while ago, but it never had a public release. Recently I added some new features and fixed some bugs, and felt it was a good time to share Galactica with the Amiga community :)

Good luck, Conquerors!

Very cool! I will give this a spin tonight! Is this similar to Advanced Space Battle (on the C64)?

crazyc 16 March 2021 11:36

I like this indeed :great:great:great:great

Unfortunately I get random crashes. Once quite early, once after playing for 20 minutes where it just creates an access error I think it is and offers me the reboot or suspend option, but crashes anyway. This is on the second system in my signature (B1230).
I may need a whdload type version to play on mine, but dont know if that is possible as this plays in a workbench window?

Ok, I found a stupid bug: /

There is:
Code:

msg:= Gt_GetIMsg (win.userport)
...
ReplyMsg (msg)

And it should be:
Code:

msg:= Gt_GetIMsg (win.userport)
...
Gt_ReplyIMsg (msg)

I don't know how I did it, I'll prepare a fix ...

Please let me know if i can do anything to help although I have no technical knowledge. If I can generate any logs etc for example perhaps?
I have to say from just the first few goes I do like this game.

Vojo 16 March 2021 14:25

Fixed, version 2.0.1:

crazyc 16 March 2021 14:44

Tried the new version but this one locks up completely after 3 - 6 turns for me - no error message just freezes.
On the last one I got a yellow recoverable guru then went back to the game which then froze before I could click send. Always seems to be just before I hit send.

crazyc 16 March 2021 15:30

Just played right through to turn 60 before the usual crash. But after I reboot I only made it to turn 4......

@crazyc; it might help if you give some details about your setup i.e:
... Amiga model
... Accelerator card installed?
... RAM
... OS
... etc.
Only Toni Wilen has a crystal ball; I don't think anyone else does :p

As per my earlier post "This is on the second system in my signature (B1230)."
;)

I have just tried it booting from a 3.1.4.1 based CF card and that didnt crash so maybe my system?

Vojo 16 March 2021 19:24

Thank you so much, I will hopefully try it out in a bit. What version of workbench are you running it on?
As I said it might be my system (3.9) as when I ran it on a 3.1.4.1 based system it seemed ok except for graphic corruption in the bottom right panel.
I am rapidly getting addicted to this game .....

graphic corruption is fixed in 2.0.2 too, I tested it on 3.1 and 3.1.4

crazyc 16 March 2021 21:49

Played through to completion on my 3.1.4.1. system, but crashed on turn 46 on my 3.9 system.

Thoughts if you were looking for any developments:
Maybe allow 'player' to be named?
High score table for those who beat the computer and the (least) number of moves?
Difficulty level options (how many worlds the computer starts with)
But those are just thoughts as I am enjoying it as it is so thank you for sharing.

Maybe a low stack issue?

How might I be able to resolve that - as its clearly my system which has the issue?
Cheers

Go into the Properties of the icon i.e. the .INFO file and adjust the Stack size.

Or you can set for everything by add the following to your "S/Startup-Sequence", which typically ranges from 4096 to 40000 bytes:

Code:

Stack <size>

Nice game, and strangely addictive. Perfect for coffee breaks. Thank you!

Now, how about adding one or two snippets of code to take this to the next level...Master of Orion? :D

crazyc 24 March 2021 23:15

Tried changing the stack to no avail :crying- also tried this on my 060 RTG amiga running 3.9 with the same results.

Could someone else running 3.9 see if this works for them?
Cheers

Excellent game for some nice blasts, works great in my V4+ and I will be surely playing this in the future between productivity sessions!

Thank you for your efforts!
