Very interesting, thanks for the link. I have 1 machine that runs win 3.11 just so I can run my old win 3x programs in it.

The platform my foot, you still had to "exit to DOS" in order to play said games :p

It gives me goosebumps just thinking about Win 3.1's UI :laughing

Why anybody would want to go back to Windows 3.x is beyond my comprehension. Why not just a DOS box?

Well windows 3.11 on a pentium mmx with 64mb of memory is a rocket compared to windows 9x.

Basically the equipment and for the most part legal software can be had for next to nothing allowing you to do constructive work and even browse the web for little or no money.

Windows 3.x was as stable as the most stable driver running on it. The only major bug I heard about was that it wouldnt run for more then a month without a reboot, something very few people do these days anyway.

There's got to be a way to dual boot 3.11 and Win 9x/Xp, no??

I think you can dual boot anything

Yes you can, basically Win 3.xx will be part of the DOS partition and then place Win 9x on another partition and Win NT/2K/XP on a third partition.

You can also use different drives as partitions as well :)

Myself I have different boxes for these uses as I have so many extra parts it's nice to have a little DOS/Win 3.xx box and a separate Win 9x box and another Win XP box.

Almost forgot to mention there are a numbe of third party partition/boot managers out there that will create a small menu/boot partition with a selection screen to choose which partition is to be marked active and booted from while hiding the other partitions automatically ;)

Tell me more! I need to get my other machine setup so it can replace my existing piece of crap...essentially I can't decide which I hate more, W2k or W98. They both suck bad, IMHO, and since they will each eventually corrode to the point where I am at now, having two installations will give me a certain flex. And before some clown suggests it, I'd rather use a Speccy than XP....

btw, a different machine for each of those OS's? You have enough space to do this?

I don't have a favorite as I've never used one, just kind of looked at a couple of them. I've always used dual boot with the OS like when using DOS/Win9x together or Win9x with NT/2K/XP.

I understand the dilema with choosing a specific OS here, but for stability 2K/XP are better then Win 9x. Now I qualify this in that I personally use XP Pro for most of my workstations and for my gaming rig. Do I have problems, yes I do from time to time, but most of these are caused by a hickup from a device driver or two, i.e., graphics cards and/or sound cards. Is this the root cause of said problem, most likely a combination of both these and the OS but hey, I don't mind re-installing my rigs every so often. Guess I'm a masochist :laughing

Yes I have enough room for most machines in my house, some are in the basement, some on the main floor and some on the second floor. But there is only so much room of course so I'd have about 20 machines setup if I actually had the room. This would include all the C64/128's, Amiga's and MAC's along with the PC's.

Perhaps I'll win a Powerball and really get some space, nah, I'd be buying up more retro machines then I'd have room :lol

I recommend XOSL for a multi-OS computer. I have never seen a better bootmanager, and it's freeware.

Or get a removable HD sled and have each OS on its own HD. My main game rig has a 30gb for games (win ME) and a 20gb for win2k

wil any Linux distro let me load an X session plus window manager, in a 4MB 486 machine?

I found an old Thinkpad at my GF's, and wanted to load it up with a better OS so it works with internet and all. Currently it runs (slugs, more like :D) with Win95, I thought about this Win3.11 thiung, but I'd preffer a better OS running with it.

DesqviewX would run on 4mb. Its multitasking OS that does Xwindows along with running ultiple dos apps.

Yes it was, a kind of multitasking OS that did dos, unix, and windows 3.x I believe

So you actually use this product? I looked at the page and if it does what it promises, it could be the corker I need (and might even inspire me to go ahead and install a Linux distro or something.)

I did use it when I had both Win98 and WinXP on my system. It is really comfortable and easy to use, but now I'm only using WinXP so there's no more need for a bootmanager.

Ugh...at least I feel quite confident this disease I will never catch.
