A500 sideport Fast RAM

Hi!

I can't seem to find any 'modern' sideport expansion for A500 that adds 8MB Fast RAM - I am aware of the ACA500/+ expansions, but I was wondering if there is anything cheaper/easier sourced or produced somewhere? Something the size of old SupraRAM would be perfect...

HC508cr?

Internal, you have a few options:
HC533
Wicher500i
TerribleFire 5somethingsomething
etc

Side port difficult.

The CPU socket, you could use kipper2k 504/508IDE. Good upgrades that offer 4 or 8MB Fast Ram. Perfect for WHDLoad and other uses.

To get hold of one, kipper2k himself if he isn't too busy on something else? Or, you could put a wanted post out for said item and hope someone replies.

Speaking from experience the kipper2k 504/508IDE is an awesome board, compatible with both Amiga 500/500 Plus. Some have even managed to get them running on A2K units.

The 2 links below show another possible Fast Ram upgrade you could use and the differences between ACA500 and kipper2k 508IDE.

It also explains the small mod you have to do, to get the kipper2k 504/508IDE installed correctly. Nothing too difficult.

Thanks! Looks interesting with ACA500+ temporarily out of stock

Yup, I do realize that, not much love for that one, unfortunately...

I have the CPU slot already occupied by IDE controller - bought one along with the RAM expansion and multikick, realized too late that many turbos a) have IDE controller onboard; b) occupy the same slot; so, I started to look at the Fast RAM possibilities utilizing the side port...

This, OTOH, looks VERY interesting, I'd have to check if the two-layer stack would fit under the A500 cover...

Like I wrote in another thread:

https://www.amedia-computer.com/en/a...ator-card.html

It seems they have it on stock and it is a brilliant card indeed, I have been using one for 18 months now.

I think your link got garbled:

If I ever have a 3rd A500 (and I wouldn't rule it out at this point!) then I'll get one of these for it.

Thanks guys, I managed to google up the HC508 without problems :)
Brainstorming time: looks like it would be possible to 'remap' "the 8MB RAM to 68000" to the sideport, leaving the IDE controller and CPU inside, am I right? As in old Supra, but smaller? The sideport has all the CPU lines but I am not tech enough to even think of it, so would need the PCB magicians to make it ;)

E-Penguin 25 April 2018 11:29

Everything is possible. I've not yet found a cpu-socket based expansion that plays nicely with autoconfig though, so there might be incompatibilities.

watman 01 May 2018 22:01

OK, a different question - I can't seem to find the pcb design moving the CPU slot to the sideport - surely, someone must have thought of it earlier, right?
Any hints?
