Classic Amiga games that have had remakes/sequels in the last few years

As the title suggests I am looking for several classic Amiga games which have had remakes/sequels in the last few years. My lack of knowledge on the Amiga library is showing so any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Alien Breed and Monkey Island come to mind but I need help from the experts :bowdown

Worms has been making a come back as well

Speedball 2 was remade in 3D.... talk about missing the point!

Babylonian Twins, Beneath a Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queen and Qwak are now on itunes with Putty Squad to follow. Hmmm guess what is on my Ipod Touch!

Sensible Soccer 2006 was released on Xbox and PS2, it was not very good!

Chaos Engine for phones with Java. Xenon 2 remake for PC Windows.

Frog 30 November 2010 13:43

Alien Breed have some sequels on PC

T_hairy_bootson 30 November 2010 13:46

Sensible Soccer also had an xbox live version for the 360.

Carrier Command seems to be stuck in development hell.

Qwak also made an appearance on the GBA I believe.

I think Wings was released for the GBA also.

Not focused on the most recent ones but anyway if you find some missing in his list, feel free to suggest them for addition to Dreamkatcha.

You mean the one-level "Xenon 2000" demo included with PC Format?

Regarding Xenon 2, I do wonder why Amiga Format gave the CDTV version such a poor mark (32%). Was the gameplay already that dated in 1992?

s2325 30 November 2010 15:31

Yes, Xenon 2000. I think not dated but different from other shooters.

Alien Breed (Evolution and Assault - IIRC) has been released on Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network. I have the first remake and think it is pretty good - it uses the Unreal engine.

Mequa 30 November 2010 15:52

Both classic Monkey Island games (Secret of Monkey Island and LeChuck's Revenge) got a recent High Definition remake with FULL SPEECH!
(The new PC versions are pretty bloated, however. Core2Duo or higher, nVidia/ATI GPU plus several free gigabytes HDD space is a good idea.)

Also don't forget Tales of Monkey Island, which continues where LucasArts left off in a full 3D environment - and (unlike LucasArts's MI3 and MI4 on Windows) had some input from the "Visiting Professor of Monkeyology" himself, Ron Gilbert.

deicidal 30 November 2010 16:09

I will have to give Tales of monkey island a worl, MI3 was to short and MI4 was just rubbish trying to make the game into something it wasnt imho

squidbass 30 November 2010 16:12

Silent Hunter - seen a PC version in Morrisons...

Toki will get a remake on the DS in 2011.

They are not remakes, they are new games (and very good ones!) reusing the name to lift on nostalgia. Good choice too, as when it comes to franchise names, "Alien Breed" just oozes coolness :)

The DS has a few remakes. Robocod, Giana Sisters. All pretty bad IMO.

Dreedo 01 December 2010 13:21

I believe there is a 3rd Alien Breed game available on XBLA as well, Descent or something.

hipoonios 01 December 2010 13:42

Don't forget about Ironclaw's Ruff 'N' Tumble remake.

If your display can handle 1280x960 or 1280x1024 or higher modes, try Curse of Monkey Island (MI3) in ScummVM with HQ2X filter. An almost-HD version of MI3 :D

ScummVM can run Amiga versions of Monkey Island 1 and 2, but unfortunately does not emulate the smoother scrolling of the Amiga version of MI2. You need WinUAE for that.

Amiga-wise I mostly use ScummVM to run the Miggy versions of Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken.
The latter got a 256 colour remake for FM-Towns with full CD music, which also runs excellent on ScummVM. Amiga Maniac Mansion is still the definitive version (excluding fan remakes such as Maniac Mansion Deluxe, which does not use SCUMM).

Another good Amiga Scumm game which got a decent enhancement exclusive to FM-Towns is Loom.
The FM-Towns version includes all the original backgrounds redrawn in 256 colours, and full CD background music.
A talkie VGA version of Loom was also released for MS-DOS CD-ROM in 1992, which added full speech with cut-down dialogue, but unfortunately removed all the atmospheric in-game music. Fools!

Anyway, both versions are playable in ScummVM (with support for FLAC or OGG Vorbis for CD audio).
Amiga and DOS EGA versions work too. :D

P.S. There are some tricky ScummVM command-line options required to access hard mode in FM-Towns Loom, but it does work! Just a few minor graphical glitches when running this version of Loom (but ScummVM is open source, so...)
