How do I make nice screenshots (like hol game maps)
When I use the screenshot function in WinUae - the screenshots are very "pixelated" - if I compare my screenshots to the gamemaps and screenshots in HOL, the HOL version seems more smooth and not as pixelated as mine.
How do I accomplish "smooth" screenshots in WinUae? |
hi i use the snipping tool in windows 7 but you have to have winuae in window mode
|
Try if this helps:
http://i59.tinypic.com/28tz504.jpg HOL screenshots and maps are taken 'pixelated', that means no filter is applied. |
I've tried the "screenshot before filtering" earlier but it dosn't do the trick. I rarely use WinUae so I don't know all settings (.
This is my attempt: http://www.bigbookofamigahardware.co...ages/putty.png Compared to the hol map mine looks real bad. |
Note that HOL maps aren't created from screenshots. They are made from tiles and map information found directly in the memory. Your colours are slightly brighter (at least it looks like that from the screenshot), but otherwise I can't see anything really wrong with your screenshot.

You're probably right about brigthness, will try to play with brigthness settings. But I still think the colors on HOL blend better together, and pixels are more "round" no sharp edges. The blue colors in the pilars on the HOL map blend perfectly.
But i'll go back and try the brigthness settings. Have played with brigthness and compared images in PhotoShop - it seems like it's the size difference between HOL and my screenshots that makes the difference. When scaled to same size they look very similar.... |
Hmm, that's a bit odd then. We always resize screenshots to be 320x256 with black borders where needed (except for overscan games, but Putty Squad isn't one of them). Make sure you have no resizing enabled.
(You might want to give FS-UAE a shot too, as it outputs three different screenshots and two of them are guranteed to not be filtered in any way) |

That screenshot looks fine to me. It's double the actual size, of course, so each pixel is actually four pixels. This is what it looks like without pixel-doubling:

Set the native resolution to something like 1920x1080 or 1600x1200 in the Display settings of UAE.
Select 'linemode double' and 'resolution hires' in the same settings panel. In the Filter settings set 'hor. size' and 'vert. size' to 2x. Switch to 'no scaling' and 'aspect ratio' to disabled. Now try to make a screenshot with and without bilinear filtering. That gives the most natural results,I think. |
You may also want to set Resolution Autoswitch in the Dispaly pane and Automatic Resize in the Filters Scaling type.then you can screenshot the image in it's original/native resolution then work of of that one.
Use a paint program afterwards to upscale it 2x, 3x pixel resize or Bilinear/Bicubic filter resize. That's the type filter used in the above screenshots. 2x Pixel without filters look best. |
